An Exciting time on July’s Gold D of E expeditions!

The day that school broke up for the summer holidays 4 groups of sixth formers set off to Scotland for their gold D of E expeditions.

Two groups attempted to travel from Loch Arkaig to Loch Ailort off the west coast which included a proposed 40 mile canoe journey. On the third day strong winds meant that they were unable to reach the end of Loch Shiel so they turned around and hoisted their sails! The expedition therefore concluded in a different style to what they had planned!

Meanwhile the other two groups had taken the ferry into Inverie – the most remote village on the mainland and were en route, on foot, through Knoydart to Glenfinnan.

The same bad weather on the third day meant that river levels rose and even small streams became impassible. With close supervision necessary from Tim and Mrs Rodham they found a safe way through….

The group took shelter in A’Chuil bothy and river levels dropped allowing the teams to finish in sunshine the following day.

We have our third Gold Expedition out this coming weekend – another long canoe trip down Loch Tay and the River Tay.
